Fewer, Better, Faster – Reality of Trends in the Nuclear Industry

The electricity markets are being deregulated around the world. Although the exact scope and timetable may vary, the trend is unmistakable. This intense deregulation is driving generators to significantly reduce their costs to improve their competitiveness. Nuclear fuel is not immune from this process. Yet, there is excess supply capability in all areas of the nuclear fuel cycle and prices have been generally low for some time. As a result, suppliers have in general not received reasonable returns on investment and in the worst cases even a return of their investment. In order to maintain a healthy supply industry in the long term, this must change. Otherwise, new investment will suffer with competition as the ultimate victim. Consolidations have begun and the suppliers have reduced their costs. The issue becomes how can utilities improve their competitiveness while maintaining a vibrant supply industry? Fewer, faster, better, the slogan of modern business, can the trend continue?
